Jim Mondloch 5-day Residency Lesson Plan

This lesson plan is for grades 6-8. The class sizes vary. Class sizes range from one to thirty students. These are five examples of many themes used in a week long residency.

 

The Goals for each day are listed and the student objectives are behind them.

Day 1 Subject - Intro of Watercolor Techniques

-Introduction to Watercolor. - demonstrate dry brush, washes,

-Using and Understanding Materials

-Introduction to Watercolor Techniques - demonstrate dry brush, washes,

and varieties of brush strokes

Day 2 Subject - Desert Scene

- Multiple Graded Washes from Dark to Light - demonstrate how to lighten a hue by adding water

- How to Create Distance through - paint objects in different Linear and Aerial Perspective sizes and values to create depth

- Introduction to Design Principles - paint with variety and dominance of color

Day 3 Subject - Mountains and/or clouds

- Lifting Paint - lighten a hue without the use of water

- Texture in Watercolor - create texture through a variety of techniques

Day 4 Subject - Rain Forest

- Turning Shapes into Form - draw shapes, add value and color to them to make them look three dimensional

- Edge related shapes - paint a theme with shapes that start outside of the picture and continue into the picture

Day 5 Subject - Water Scene

- Glazing Technique - use multiple layers of transparent washes to change colors

- Negative Painting - paint the space behind an object, also known as the background
